This directorate general was established in 2009 as Directorate General Livestock extension upper Sindh, to be based at Sukkur with the following supporting staff

The livestock and fisheries Department in 2013 through an order, in view of improving the working of the Department and to make it even / equitable, the work load / distribution was renamed / redefined and the Director General Livestock Extension / Research was made as in-charge and supervising officer of the following institution of the department.

1. Directorate Veterinary Research and Diagnosis Sindh, Tando jam
2. Project Director, Vaccine production unit Sindh, Tando Jam.
3. Sindh Poultry Vaccine Centre (SPVC) Karachi.
4. Poultry Research Institute Karachi.
5. Government Livestock Farms all in Sindh.

The Head Quarter of the Director General Livestock Extension / Research was also fixed at Hyderabad instead of Sukkur, which is functioning in the premises of Defunct “Strengthening of livestock service project” building situated behind Shahbaz building Thandi Sarak Hyderabad.
